Halloween:
(Horror Genre)
The Trailer starts with non diegetic music of slow music, the scene is set in a street where it is dark and raining. A woman is walking up to the camera where she is hysterically crying "i killed him" this suggests that it could either be a planned murder or she was being attacked and killed someone. A man tries to find out who she killed "who'd you kill sweetie?" this suggests that he is trying to be as nice to her as possible and stay calm to relax the lady. The screen then goes black. Non diegetic sound of someone screaming begins and then 3 different shots appear of a woman who has been seriously hurt and she is in the hospital. She looks in agony. This conforms to our stereotypes of a horror film as it suggests someone is hurting other people. It also subverts as the victims do not usually get saved. A close up is shown of the woman's face and she looks very swollen and dirty. It also conforms to our stereotypes of a horror film because the woman is the victim suggesting she is weaker than a male would be.
The screen then goes to black and non diegetic sound of screaming is heard. The screen then slowly reveals a lady who is tied to a hospital bed, she looks in pain and is very disturbed by what has happened to her. She looks very dirty, as if she has been attacked. The camera slowly moves around her bed to show her at every angle. Her face looks wet, this could suggest she has had something thrown in her face, something like acid which is known to really hurt and scar people. It is clear that her top was white as little bits are shown through all the dirt which is covering her entire body. This links to Strauss's theory of 'binary opposites' suggesting opposites attract, for example, her white top suggests she is innocent but the black dirt suggests she is in danger and has been seriously attacked.
A medium shot is used as the same girl lays in her hospital bed, she needs help but no one will answer. This suggests that something bad is going to happen. A long shot is then used as she walks down the hospital corridor limping. She walks up to the front desk to see the receptionist laying on the floor, this suggests someone is there to kill them. Could it be the same man who attacked her before she went to the hospital? It is clear that because the lady had been so badly injured she is going to have flash backs and most likely be very scared of everything that happens, especially seeing some dead.
A close up of feet are shown and a non diegetic high pitched sound is heard, a similar sound to nails on a chalk board. Diegetic sound is heard as the lady screams, she cannot run very fast because her leg is broken and she needs the water which is attached to her arm. The camera is positioned at the bottom of the stairs as the lady falls down the stairs into the camera. This allows the audience to see the ladies facial expression as she tumbles down and hurts herself even more. Just behind her in the shot we see the same pair of boots, the boots are a very stereotypical horror movie prop, this is because they are very masculine and are loud when the antagonist is walking. A medium shot is shown as the protagonist lays at the bottom of the stairs unable to move. This suggests there is no escape for her. The screen then goes black again and the scene changes. The protagonist is looking in the mirror at herself, this suggests that what happened was all a dream. A close up of a clown is then shown.
A montage of different shots are then shown, this gives an indication to the audience of what the film involves without giving too much away. A young boy is then face to face with the antagonist. "Are you a giant?" this shows the naivety of the young boy who isn't scared of this unknown character. A medium shot of a policeman is then shown, he is holding a gun. This suggests even he is scared of what is going to happen. This trailer as a whole conforms to the stereotypes of a horror trailer and has been really useful to get an indication of different shots and sounds we should include in our trailer.
