'The shallows'
Horror Trailer:
The trailer starts with two film institutions, 'Sony' and 'Columbia', they are both very well known institutions which suggests that the film has had a lot of money gone into it. By using the two film institutions at the beginning of the trailer it shows that synergy has been used. Synergy is the interaction or cooperation of two or more organisations, substances or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects and can mean that the film they have both supported has had a lot of work and effort put into it.
The trailer starts with a birds eye view of the sea water which is very blue and looks like the ideal place to go on a holiday. This suggests that the film is going to be set in a hot country and is probably going to be about someone being on holiday. This can conform to our expectations of a horror film because it suggests that the film is going to start in a happy place and something bad is going to happen and this will happen when the audience is least expecting it. The beach is also empty, except for one person (where it is unclear to see if it is a male or female) who is on their own and looks like they are about to go surfing. This increases the tension of the film because something bad could happen to that person in the water and no one is there to help them or rescue them.
The trailer then cuts to a medium, low angled shot of a girl who is surfing. The camera shows her bikini bottoms which are stereotypcially seen to be very 'girly' as they have flowers on them. This again stereotypically suggests because she is a female she is a lot more vulnerable. The non-diegetic sound is a very quite, deep sound. It is very unclear to tell what it is, but it makes the scene sounds very eerie and would make the audience watching this trailer feel very on each and if they like the eerie effect it will give them adrenaline to go and see the film when it comes out.
The trailer then cuts to a long shot of birds flying away, this suggests that something has scared them away which could mean there is a predator approaching.
A medium shot shows the female character surfing into a wave, the non diegetic sound becomes very slow and suggests that it is the sounds coming from the wave but has been put into a slow motion form. This creates tension as is suggests that as she enters the wave something is going to be underneath or it suggests that she is about to fall off her surf board. The camera then moves to a long shot of the character underneath the water and the water is very dark and blurry and the only thing the audience can really focus on is her body on the surf board. A low angles shot is then used as she begins to float back up, the diegetic sound of the water is very clear and it sounds like we as an audience are underneath there with her. This suggests that the directer wanted us to feel as though we could also be in danger too. A side angle, close up is then used of the actresses face and she comes out of the water. The screen then goes to black.
The next shot is a long shot of two male characters who are also surfing, they wave over the the actress and tell her to come over. This will put the audience at rest because they now know that someone else is there to look after her and because they are male is stereotypcially means they are stronger and can help her. The audience properly get introduced to the main character who is a very well known actress, this will also encourage the audience watching the trailer to go and watch the film because it suggests that she is going to be amazing in the film and it is going to be very successful. The female character looks very happy. A moving medium shot is then used as the scene changes to underneath the water, the camera quickly moves towards her surf board, suggesting that it is a shark. The non-diegetic sound becomes very upbeat as we approach her board. As we expect the shark to get there, the scene changes to the female character biting into an apple.
The audience then watch the main character get ready for her next surf. A close up shot is used of her name badge and shows where she is from, this suggests she is travelling which means she doesn't know much about the place that she is in and she doesn't know about what things could be swimming in the sea and could hurt her. Diegetic sound is then used of the skype dialling tone, which conforms to the idea of her travelling as it suggests she is skyping her loved ones. A medium shot is used of her sister as she looks very happy about being able to talk to her. This creates quite a sad atmosphere because if it reaches all the expectations of a horror movie then something bad is going to happen.
Shot reverse shot is used as the main character talks to a local man, 'what did you say this place was called?' 'It is called Paradise' this suggests that she has found a lovely destination but something doesn't seem right. A medium shot is again used as she begins to surf. The diegetic sound of the water is very peaceful. A medium shot is again used as she begins to try and get back onto her surf board, a sharp non diegetic sound happen and is very upbeat, and the actress falls into the water, like something pushed her off. A close up is used of her face as she screams under the water but nothing is heard. A medium shot is then used as she begins to swim towards the top of the water and she is surrounded in blood. This conforms to a good trailer because the scenes change very quickly and make the audience feel very on edge. The non diegetic sound becomes very hard to hear and becomes very upbeat and is a similar sound to when someone zones out and has lots of water in their ears. This suggests that the audience are experiencing what she is.
A close up is used of her hand as she reaches a rock, this suggests she might be saved. A long shot is then used in her eyes as she looks around and sees the two males who are surfing. A close up is then used of her face as she screams 'SHARK!!' A long shot is then used again as one of the males gets eaten. shot reverse shot is used as it goes back to the female character as she looks like she is about to be sick. It reverts back to the male who survived and he swims over as fast as he can. The scene moves it along and he reaches the rock, a close up is used as he tries to get up and she tries to help him. He doesn't live and the screen goes black.
As the scene changes a close up shot is used of her leg as she straps it up and the diegtic sound is enhanced to make it sound very painful. This conforms to our conventions of a horror movie because it is very gruesome and looks very painful. It also subverts to our stereotypes of the women surviving and the males dying as the males are usually seen as the more powerful characters.
'I'm not dying here' this is spoken over the title 'this summer' which also creates a scary effect as she is going to try and fight back. A close up is used of her watch as she tries to work out the timings of the shark. The 'bleep' sound of the watch is then played over the next titles and the different shots which are quickly spread over the trailer. This creates tension and suggests that it is never going to end. The last shot is of her with a gun, this will leave the audience wondering where she got the gun from and will encourage them to go and see it.
