War Of The Worlds Trailer: (Action Genre)

War of the Worlds

(Action Genre)

The trailer for War of the Worlds gives off a very creepy effect. The trailer starts with the famous production company 'Paramount' this is used to promote the film and gives it a unique selling point because it is well known company. This could make the film more popular because the fan base of the production company will be interested in the film because they will want to know how successful the film is. The production company 'Dream Works' is also included in the beginning of the trailer. This shows Synergy, this means that the two or more companies working together, this suggests to the audience that the film is going to be very successful as two well known companies are working together.

The scene starts with a black screen and Non-Dietetic sound is used as a voice is talking over the top of it, the voice is very blurred and sounds like signal is being lost. This gives off a spine chilling effect as the voice is the only thing that is heard. Although the audience don't know who or what is being heard, the voice is very familiar and quite well known. This has been done to encourage the audience to watch the trailer as they want to know who the characters. A quieter sound is also being played in the background and it sounds like wind. This also creates the effect that the scene is going to be set outdoors and that something is about to happen. The audience are introduced to the earth, this is shown through an establishing shot. This is effective as the trailer is slowly showing more information about the film and where it is set, at the moment the audience know it could be set on earth or it could be set in space. This gives an eerie effect because it suggests the world is in danger and something in space is about to harm the planet. This would create an unnatural effect on the audience watching this because it could make the audience think of different circumstances which could occur . This is a good effect which the trailer is giving off because it is leaving the audience guessing, meaning it will encourage them to want to go and see it.

The audience is then introduced to a long shot of oncoming traffic, the scene then cuts to people walking across the road. This shows good editing skills which suggests that the producer wants the audience to see how life goes on even though something could be about to happen. Dietetic sound is used of the cars beeping at each other, this also shows normality and day to day life. A birds eye view shot is also then used to show the different roads and people trying to get home. Different cities are then shown as the sun goes down, this suggests that everywhere is in danger not only one city and this creates a scary but also sad effect because it could suggest that a lot of people are going to be hurt. Non dietetic sound is then used as the screen goes black, this adds to the mystery of what is about to happen, which would encourage the audience to want to see the film.

Throughout the trailer so far there has been a man talking, his voice is very calm and hasn't changed. This suggests that he has no emotion towards what is happening which suggests he is not giving anything away. Non dietetic sound is also used of the birds as the camera pans down the sky showing the stars, this also suggests normality. An establishing shot show shot moves down from the sky onto a road, non dietetic sound is used of dogs barking, slight bangs and crashes happen and people talking. A long shot is used of a street and it shows people turning on their lights. A close up shot is then used of someones window as their light turns on and a man walks towards his window. Could it be the man who is talking throughout the trailer? This could be a question the audience is asking. The effect in which the the long shot gives of the street suggests that something is wrong and people are beginning to worry. Medium shots are then used to show people coming out of their houses to see what is going on. A close up shot is used of a family and the mother is holding their child, this creates an emotional effect as it suggests that the child is scared and her family are going to try and protect her. All of the families are in their pyjamas which suggests that the noise was so loud that they had to go out and see what it was. A long shot is then used of the sky which has flashing lights and screeching sounds.

"Slowly and surely they used their plans against us" this is one of the quotes the voice over says, this suggests that something has got a plan and it is going to hurt earth and the people living on it. This conforms to an action genre because it suggests that fire, fighting and unnatural creatures are about to enter the world. Although this is the case, there must be a hero and this is what the audience must be thinking and this will also encourage them to want to watch the film because they will want to know who is going to save earth and the people in it.

A low medium shot is used of all the different families standing their watching the sky and waiting for something to happen. This is quite an emotional scene as it looks like they are all awaiting their deaths or waiting for something bad to happen. Non dietetic sounds are happening of different screeches and bangs. The sounds sound very similar to planes, suggesting it could be spaceships, which would mean that aliens are attaching. This would make sense because of all the different camera shots of space and of the sky.

A panning shot is then used as the camera slowly moves up to the sky showing all the different colours being used, as the camera reaches the sky there is an explosion which comes straight towards the camera which shows fire. This conforms to the conventions of an actions film. The trailer then goes to the title of the film 'War of the worlds'. The non dietetic sound used is very upbeat and also fits to the conventions of an action film.
